http://www.goodreads.com
This is a site that includes book reviews, author information, group discussions, the ability to create a book list for yourself, and more.
Among other uses, this can be used in a school setting to create online book clubs. In fact, several student groups are already listed - some are public and some are only open to those in the group. This would be a great way to foster discussion for English classes or for book clubs for those students who don't like to talk in class, can't stay after school, or just simply prefer to communicate in writing online. It can help students choose books that would interest them if they can read other student reviews.
There are also groups for librarians and others that might help media coordinators with choosing books for their facility in addition to seeing reviews. A media coordinator could also start a group where students can suggest books they would like to see in the media center. If students feel they have a stake and a voice in what is in the media center, they are more likely to use it.
Helping to bring reading into the online atmosphere by combining the two and fostering discussion among students about literature, both read for fun and for class, can only add an additional element of interest for students.
